Cross Roads Baptist Church

The annual Sacred Harp singing at Cross Roads Baptist Church was held on the first Sunday in July. Louis Hughes, Sr. called the class to order at 10:00 a.m. with song on page 32t and led the class in prayer. Louis Hughes, Sr. extended a warm and heartfelt welcome to everyone for their attendance, and led song on page 138b in memory of his father, Rev. J.C. Hughes. Miranel Swafford led songs on pages 137 and 348b; Mary Florence Smith 31b, 45t; and Margie Smith 303.

A business session was held with the following officers elected or appointed to serve: Chairman—Louis Hughes, Sr.; Vice Chairman—Miranel Swafford; Secretary—Hester Edwards; Memorial Committee—Mary Florence Smith; Arranging Committee—Margie Smith.

Mary Florence Smith conducted the memorial lesson with comments made about songs that are in our Sacred Harp book with thoughts centered on the song “Passing Away”.

Marcia Johnson gave a very moving memorial presentation with illustrations from the words in various songs and led songs on pages 345b and 91 to conclude her comments.

Teenie Moody led song on page 146 for the sick and shut-ins, followed by Mary Florence Smith leading song on page 445b. Rev. Howard Locklear, former pastor of the church, closed the memorial with prayer.

LUNCH

The afternoon of singing began with David Lee leading song on page 39t.
