Saturday, July 8

The annual Cullman County Courthouse Singing Convention was convened on Saturday, July 8, 2000 at the Courthouse on the third floor in one of the courtrooms. Billy Williams called the singing to order leading song on page 33b. The morning prayer was given by Robert Bates, Circuit Clerk, who addressed the convention by welcoming everyone and offering an inspirational poem entitled “The Old Bridge Builder”.

The memorial lesson was presented by Eron White. Eron commented that when we come to this part of the convention, it makes us sad, but also glad when we think of the singers and friends who have passed away since last we met. It brings joy to our hearts to know we will be able to sing with them around the Great White Throne. They gave their best to the cause and in the promotion of Sacred Harp singings, and may we never forget them and their memories.

Gennie Nelms read the list of deceased, and Henry Guthery led song on page 420b. Those remembered: Virgil Phillips, Ester Wall Brown, Rosa Hughes, Everett Kilgo, Audie Black, J.L. Oden, Patsy Merritt, Mary Oden, Gertie Knight, Charles Grant, and Stella Stricklin.

Gennie Nelms read the list of the sick and shut-ins, and Eron White led song on page 340. Those remembered: Alpha Black, Ruby Phillips, Thurman Nall, Lou Nall, I.V. Cockrell, Tommye Denson Mauldin, Emma Pirkle, Sheila Moon, Mavis Price, and Marie Aldridge. John Merritt closed the memorial session with prayer.
