Cleburne County Convention

Cane Creek Primitive Baptist Church, near Heflin, Alabama

The one hundred-eleventh session of the Cleburne County Sacred Harp Singing Convention met at Cane Creek Primitive Baptist Church near Heflin, Alabama on the third Sunday in August. Cecil Edwards called the class to order leading songs on pages 97 and 144. Everette Denney offered the morning prayer.

Cecil Edwards led the Introductory Lesson with the following songs selected: 35, 49b, and 100. Jeff Sheppard led songs on pages 87 and 110.

A business session was held with the following officers elected or appointed to serve: Chairman—Cecil Edwards; Vice Chairman—B.J. Harris; Secretary—Mary Florence Smith; Arranging Committee—Hester Edwards; Memorial Committee—Mary Florence Smith.

Cecil Edwards brought the class together leading song on page 147t. Smith 318, 441; Bud Oliver 345t, 274t; Flora Skinner 426b, 434. The class sang “Happy Birthday” to Flora Skinner who turned 92 today!

Mary Florence Smith gave the memorial service, and asked that we remember all those who have passed away that were instrumental in forming, supporting, and sustaining this convention over the years. Mary Florence pointed out that this was the 111th session of the Cleburne County Convention with the first session being held at St. Michael Church, Cleburne County, Alabama. The convention was formed with three days of singing, and remained so until 1988 or 1989. At that time the convention was cut to two days and remained so until 1992 when it was cut to one day. Mars Hill Primitive Baptist Church is considered to be the home of the convention, but any church in Cleburne County can call for the singing. Cane Creek Primitive Baptist Church has also stated that the convention was welcome there anytime that there was no place else to meet. Mary Florence Smith led song on page 285t for the deceased and song on page 30b for the sick and shut-ins. Felton Denney closed the memorial with prayer.

LUNCH

Cecil Edwards called the afternoon session to order leading song on page 159.

The business session was reopened to discuss the location for next year’s convention. The Convention will meet back at Cane Creek Primitive Baptist Church next year. The business session was closed.
