The third annual Jack C. Smith Memorial Singing met at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia on Labor Day. The class was called to order by Chairman John Plunkett leading 49t. Gaylon Powell offered the opening prayer.

RECESS

John Plunkett called the class back to order leading 122 (in memory of Ruth Brown). Leaders: Scott DePoy 274t, 36b; Sally Palmer 143, 63; Sandra Wilkinson 388, 100; Eileen Metzger 101t, 101b; Gaylon Powell 512 (in memory of B.E. Matthews), 383; Joan Durdin 72b, 47t; Myra Tucker 40, 114; Andy Morse 480, 347. The class dismissed one hour for lunch, with Andy Anderson asking the blessing for the meal.

LUNCH

The class resumed singing with John Plunkett leading 52t and 452 (in memory of Jack Smith). Andrew Gee, Oakhurst Worship and Music Committee, was invited into the hollow square and requested to hear 85. As a representative of the church, he was thanked for allowing us to use this space and hold this event to remember our friend, Jack Smith. John Plunkett led 346 in honor of Memorial Day.

It had been proposed earlier in the day that consideration be made in next year’s session to include use of the “J.L. White Book.” This was agreed upon, and next year’s singing will use both “The Sacred Harp, 1991 Revision” and the “1911 J.L. White Book” (newly reprinted).

John Plunkett led 323t as the closing song, and then dismissed the class with prayer.
