8th Annual Golden Gate Sacred Harp Singing

Please join us for the upcoming 8th Annual Golden Gate Singing. We will have a traditional Sacred Harp singing school on Saturday, April 21, in Berkeley, and one full day of singing from the 1991 revision of the Sacred Harp in San Francisco on Sunday, April 22. See below for details.

Saturday afternoon, April 21, 2012, 1-4 pm
Traditional Sacred Harp singing school, with singing master Cassie Allen. Beginners welcome, and loaner books will be available. $5-10 suggested donation; nobody turned away.
The singing school will be held at All Saints Chapel in Berkeley, CA. The address is 2451 Ridge Rd, Berkeley, CA. To get to All Saints' by public transit, take BART to the Downtown Berkeley stop and walk north on Shattuck Ave. Turn right on University Ave (3-4 blocks from BART, depending on the station exit used). Walk for one block and turn left on Oxford. Walk for one block on Oxford, and turn right on Hearst. At the first light, bear left (not a hard left - it's a bizarre intersection) onto Le Conte Ave (straight uphill). At the top of the hill, bear right onto Ridge Rd. The chapel is around the bend, on your left.
Cassie Allen is a lifelong Sacred Harp singer whose family has been singing in the southeast for generations. She has taught many singing schools, as well as classes at Camp Fasola. Cassie plans on teaching about Sacred Harp history, the rudiments of singing, and leading. We're excited to have her coming to the Bay Area! Here is a video of Cassie singing with Tim Eriksen:

Everyone is invited to sing early American 4-part a capella hymns at the Golden Gate All Day singing, with a noontime pot luck. Locals please bring at least one large dish to share.

Registration starts at 8:30 AM, and the singing starts at 9. There will be a noontime potluck supper. All singing will be from the 1991 edition of the Sacred Harp - loaner books will be available free of change, and books will also be for sale.
To get to the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House by public transit, take the 19 Muni bus (accessible from the Civic Center BART station) to Rhode Island and Southern Heights; the venue is one block east, on De Haro. Or, take the 48 Muni bus (accessible from the 22nd St Caltrain station or the 24th St Mission BART station) to Rhode Island and 23st St. Walk one block east and turn left on De Haro. The venue is two blocks uphill.
Socials
An informal social will be held Saturday at the house of a local singer, following the singing school. Details will be announced at the singing school.
