Annual Oxford Sacred Harp Singing Day

The sixth Annual Oxford Sacred Harp Singing Day was held on Saturday before the fourth Sunday in June. Chairman Edwin Macadam called the class to order at 10:15 a.m. leading 155. Bernard Collard offered the opening prayer.

Officers of the singing were: Chairman—Edwin Macadam; Secretary—Sheila Girling Macadam; Chaplains—Bernard Collard and Ken Baddley; Arranging Committee—Steve Fletcher and Margaret Gillanders; Memorial—Bernard Collard, Ken Baddley, and Adrian Bolge; Pitching—Rachel Jordan; Locating/signs—Tony Singleton; Food Co-ordination—Mary Bolge.

LUNCH

The afternoon session was brought to order with Edwin Macadam leading 350. Leaders: Mick Verrier “Sedna” (own composition); Margaret Gillanders 186; Ruth Steggles 454; Phil Tyler 111b; Rosalind Oldham 66; Tony Singleton “Firm Hope” (own composition).

Bernard Collard conducted the memorial lesson, with Adrian Bolge reading the names of the deceased. Those remembered were: Colin Isted, Bob Copper, Anna Young (earlier the same day), Win Tyler, Wendle Smith, Tina Bowen, Mary Finch, Donald Smith (Alabama), Wynne Cussen, Olive Anderson, and Gladys Reynolds. Mandy Townsend led 490.

The sick and housebound were recalled by Ken Baddley. Those remembered were: James Oss, Hazel Walker, Alan Fitch, Ken Robinson, Joan Stocks, and Dave Swarbrick. Sheila Girling Macadam led 45t. The memorial was closed.

Announcements were made and invitations extended to other Sacred Harp singing events around the country. Sheila Girling Macadam and Edwin Macadam thanked all the officers, committees, and anyone who helped in any way to make this singing possible.

Sheila Girling Macadam led 347 as the closing song. Adrian Bolge offered the closing prayer, and the class was dismissed.
